The location is fantastic, the views cannot be beat, but it's been a transition year at the Stafford. New management closed the office at the building so there is no longer a representative available to tenants. Also, the construction that started in October (slated until Dec) is still going daily in March including contractors on your fire escape talking loudly at all hours of the morning and day.
The inside of the building is ok, I personally like my actual apartment. And it is very comfortable during extreme exterior temperature. But there is only an option for heat OR AC in the building, so when the switch was made in September to go from AC to heat and the average temperature in October and November was mid 60's it was unbearable hot inside of the building.

Good location
It's an average apartment in a great location. While it looks 'luxury' I would say that it's pretty average student living with a great view and location. Laundry machines are always broken and the trash closets attract bugs. You would be better off living in a brownstone because the cost of rent does not reflect value of apartment property.

Terrible ownership
Do not move here. It used to be amazing - the location and building are perfect perfect perfect. But the new management! They won't fix my shower. and they won't fix my water faucet. And they won't even have an office in the building anymore. Packages are stolen, they are no help.

BRING BACK AIMCO
Was great - until the new management company took over. Now - so bad. Really really frustrating to have such a fall. They're forcing old residents to move out in favor of students (which students even live in Mount Vernon?) and they are closing the office so we have to walk blocks just to answer questions.

Great place!
The Stafford has been a great experience. The location is right in downtown Mt. Vernon, which has easy access to restaurants, bars, etc. (Though I'm not sure i would recommend it as a place to raise children.) The management team is very friendly and always answers my inquiries promptly and thoroughly.

Utilities are outrageous.
The apartment itself is ok. Nothing fancy, but not that bad. Sure, the wind goes right through the windows, but that's to be expected. The building is old. I would also recommend being wary of the possibility of loud neighbors. I am a medical student and was stuck living across from an aspiring pianist who had a baby grand piano in her micro apartment. Needless to say, the walls and doors are paper thin. More importantly, the management is partnering with Conservice to rob their residents dry in utilities. First I should mention that electricity is charged as a fraction of the total building's usage (so essentially you're double-paying to do your laundry, for example). I never once turned on the air conditioning last summer, but my energy bill still jumped from a consistent $45/month to $150+/month! This price jump somehow didn't happen during the first summer, and I'm a little suspicious about the whole thing. What's worse is that my unit's gas usage recording equipment is faulty. For the past year, I have complained to management that I am getting overcharged for gas. I prefer space heaters over the shoddy "central heating" system this building has, and have yet to actually use the heat for any significant amount of time. My gas bill has been up to $300 some months. I would like to point out that some of the months with my highest bills, I was actually out of the country (and yes, the heat was turned off in my unit). After a year of asking management to look into it, and my literally having to scream at the manager to get him to do his job, he promised me reimbursement for my incorrect charges, and set a date to get the recording equipment in my unit replaced. Well, the maintenance people never came to replace the equipment, and although he has worked to "credit my bill," I am still receiving extremely high charges for gas that I have not used. I've lost over $1000 last year on this matter, and I am living on student loan money. What is even worse is the past 2 months I have been emailing the manager asking him how he is going to address my continual false charges. Instead of a reply, I received an email sent out to the entire building that they have changed management and the former manager has left the building. Nice.

Better than Most
Solid building; in a perfect location. Managing changes frequently but so far no one has been rude or annoying, just slightly inconvenient. One the safest areas of Baltimore - I think Mount Vernon benefits from all the JHU students, especially older medical students, etc.

Old historic building, could use some sprucing up inside
I chose this place for the location. Right smack in front of the Washington Monument. Super convenient for students, 99$ deposit was a plus. The management has been fairly helpful but in general this building could use some improvement. Very slow elevators that make you late to work in the morning, poor insulation by the windows have me thinking I have the heat on for no reason, and the hallways are very outdated. I love how open my apartment is, but generally quite standard. No pest problems which is a real plus in Baltimore. Feels safe. Shared laundry in the basement is not ideal, the card system for payment should also be updated.
