I really like my building. The maintenance folks are great; there's a decent gym in the basement; the common spaces are well-kept. My apartment isn't huge, but it's perfect for just one person and big enough to have a couple of people over. I have three windows, which are enough to light almost the whole apartment with natural light during the day. My kitchen is really small, but some units have larger spaces.
The walls can be a little thin, and since there's no doorman, sometimes folks who don't live in the building can get inside when other residents let them in. But I've never felt unsafe in the building or the neighborhood.
The radiators can make it difficult to regulate the heat in the winter - but I run cold so the warmth is nice and opening a window can make the apartment comfortable. All in all, I definitely recommend the building.

Expensive, long-term stay
To begin with, the front office management is pretty terrible. There was a change in building managers about half way through, and it was impossible to get any response from that manager via email (I was trying to arrange my summer sublet, and I'm never available during the day by phone, always at school during normal business hours). After I finally got a response (by leaving school early and tracking the manager down), there were several versions of bad paperwork that went back and forth, etc. It was just really a mess. The package room situation is also pretty annoying--again, I'm usually gone during business hours, so I always have to come home early to pick things up. The manager is always trying to come up with some system or another to log packages, but doesn't want to get up from the front desk, so . . .
TLC isn't great, either. I pressed the front office manager about what the "pet rental" fee is for, and the manager had no idea. I asked to speak to someone who did, and the manager said that the manager was the only person I could speak to. Over last summer, my apartment flooded, and my sublessor texted me to let me know. When I tried to call, no one at my building answered--duh--and when I called TLC's main office they had no idea what had happened and told me they'd get back in touch when they'd contacted my building manager, who would be back from vacation in a few days. What!?
Other than that, the building is nice. I like the fixtures in my apartment, the walls are pretty soundproof, and, although it's small, I can afford living by myself which was important to me. The little gym in the basement isn't much to look at, but it works and it's not frequently in use. The laundry facilities were just upgraded. While I don't have a lot of nice things to say about the managers here, the maintenance man is the best--he's very responsive and helpful. (I wish they would put him in charge.)
The reason I paid so much to live here was the location. On 53rd and Dorchester, I'm within a few blocks of three grocery stores (recommend: Hyde Park Produce), two pharmacies (Walgreens and CVS), two liquor stores (recommend: Kimbark), excellent restaurants (Promontory, A-10, Yusho), good restaurants (Native Foods, Hyde Park Taco Station, etc.), the Harper Court movie theater, retail stores (Target, Marshall's, Michael's, Ulta, Hyde Park Records, Freehling Pot & Pan Co.), and my vet is literally across the street (Hyde Park Animal Clinic - 53rd Street). I really like being able to go downstairs and walk across the street for a burrito if I'm low on groceries, or walk to Target at 9:30 p.m. if I started cooking something and realized I'm out of an ingredient.

Great location, nice apartments
The Versailles is located at 53rd and Dorchester, which is possibly the best location within Hyde Park. I'm within a 10 minute walk of everything I need, and there are bars and restaurants right downstairs.
The apartments themselves are very nice. Upon move-in, everything was clean and newly-painted, and the fixtures (cabinets, counter tops) were great, kind of neutral people-pleasers. Hardwood floors and cabinets are probably fake, but they look more expensive than they probably were. And the building itself has a lot of character--the lobby looks like an old hotel, with brass mailboxes and railings. There's also great big crown-molding throughout my apartment, which I like a lot.
A little pricey for the small space, but I chose clean and well-maintained in a good location over size. Also, management is not /super/ responsive, if that's important to you, but adequately so.

The Versailles
The Versailles is very good for the scholar seeking a studious spot. Cherry-wood floors and decently newish appliances give the place a remodeled air. The tenants are universally courteous in my experience. Radiator heat.

I personally loved living close to campus, for access both to Harper Center and to the broader UChicago campus. I feel much more integrated with the rest of the university as a result of proximity and availability.
In short, there's enough going on in Hyde Park not to feel isolated, but it's far enough away from the city not to feel suffocated.
