Great option

I live in a 1B studio that could easily be an apartment. In general B9 team helps fix fast any issue. Furthermore, the building is relatively new, has a great gym, lobby and pool

Berkshire Ninth Street Review

Good place to live if you compare it with other 9th Street apartments. But independently, it is pretty average and overpriced. There have been a couple of security-related cases as well recently, but I am guessing that's more because of the apartment being on the 9th street.

Expensive but good

I have really enjoyed living at Berkshire 9th and have lived there all 3 years. It is a great location and you can easily walk to Harris Teeter, Whole Foods and several restaurants and shops. The area feels safe and I like that it has a parking garage for my car.
I have a dog, and the complex has one of the best dogs parks in Durham. People at the dog park are friendly. The complex also has events every month that are fun.
While I don't really use them much, the gym is large and well-stocked, and it has a nice pool. There are also gas grills available for use in the courtyard that I do occasionally use to cook. Finally, the property has a clubhouse and outdoor area that are great if you want to host friends.
The biggest downside of living here is the expense. The only other complaint I have is that the fire alarm was having some issues last year and would randomly go off during the day.
As a final tip, do not get tricked into apartments 201, 301, or 401 because those units are by the trash shoot.

Mostly great!

I have really enjoyed B9, particularly as a dog owner. I live right by the dog park which has been a nice benefit for having a high energy pup. My experience has been very positive, outside of the way mail/packages are delivered, and a slight lack of transparency around total cost.

Nice to be close to other Fuquans

During my FY it was great living close to other FY students. Many club and social events happen around ninth street which makes this location great. The building has a decent gym and pool.

Good value for money

Despite being somewhat expensive, it’s worth it. It’s relatively new and in an excellent position. Furthermore it’s Pool and gym are in a really good condition. Finally, while there are some events in there, you can still get a good night sleep

Quiet but convenient

B9 may be a tad pricier than S9, but it is SO worth it if you want to live on Ninth Street - which about 50% of Fuqua students do. B9 has fancier amenities, a staff that actually cares about you, less cockroaches (welcome to the south), a bigger pool, and a larger dog park. I also don’t have to walk through the parking garage to get to my apartment nor do I have to wait forever on an elevator (which happens at S9). I highly recommend B9!

Great location!

I really enjoy living on 9th Street. It's a bit away from where a lot of other students live, but if you have a car, I think it's the best place to be. Right next to the grocery, a ton of restaurants and stores two minutes away, and not far from Duke. All amenities are great and management has been fantastic.

Amazing Property

You can tell the team at B9 cares not only about their residents but the property. They are constantly out on the property walking and checking to make sure everything is good to go. They can be delayed on responding, but always get you a response with 24-48 hours. They have done a lot of updates to their amenities including the fitness center. They are truly in the middle of everything and a short walk to campus. Maintenance is fantastic and super responsive. They have 2-3 events per month where you can meet your neighbors and socialize as well!

Getting around Ninth Street

Ninth Street Reviews

Neighborhood has been great. Haven't been commuting to school all that frequently for obvious reasons, but takes less than 10 minutes to do so. I can grab everything I need and meet with friends all within walking distance. Durham could use more street lights in general, but in terms of safety, I think 9th street is your best option!
Best place to live hands down. Next to the supermarket, so many food options and many complexes in the area. Near downtown and Duke. Great if you’re new in town because it is super safe. Perfect if you have a car because the only downside is that depending on what Duke school you’re in it might not be walking distance.
Ninth Street is super walkable and majority of Fuquans live in the area. Definitely worth it to pay a little more to live in walking distance of so many classmates. Plus the restaurants on Ninth Street are great, and a short walk (~3 mins) to East Campus to use the walking trail!
Everything is close: other complexes like S9, B9; bars like flying bull, the tavern, supermarkets like Harris Teeter or Whole Foods, East campus hiking route.

You can get to the school by bus (45 mi) or by car (10 min). Carpooling is very commom.
Neighborhood is fine. All the Duke grad students live in the same area so it makes for a pleasant student community, and there are some decent restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance.
Harris Teeter and Whole Foods are right nearby, and the area feels generally safe. 5 min from the highway if you need to drive outside of Durham. ~10 min to get to the WaDuke/Science Drive.
The 9th St. neighborhood is great because it is within walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants on 9th St. It could be better if it were closer to Fuqua and/or downtown Durham.
All the restaurants around the 9th street area are within 5 mins walk from the complex. The campus is an 8-10 minute drive. Downtown Durham is also an 8-10 minute drive away.
