Lakeview
A Lively Neighborhood By The Lake
A massive and lively neighborhood, Lakeview offers great shopping, tasty dining options, celebrated pubs and bars, and a host of other entertainment options including live music, comedy shows, and exciting street festivals. Take an excursion to Krista K Boutique for tasteful brands and the latest fashions, but also be sure to stop by Unabridged Bookstore to pick up the latest novel. Take a break and stop at bopNgrill for Korean fusion cuisine or Crisp for some of Chicago's most highly rated fried chicken. Wash down your food with craft beers from Burn Brewing Company or a classy glass of Pinot at Pastoral. Rock out to indie music at Schubas or breathe in the jazz at Metro Chicago. Lakeview is a delightful neighborhood to live in, and it is a wonderful choice if you are moving to Chicago.

Lakeview —
8.3/10 Rating
(based on 192 neighborhood reviews)
I'm technically at the intersection of Lakeview, Buena Park, and Wrigleyville so I feel like I get a mix of all three neighborhoods in my day to day. Buena Park is much more family oriented and a bit more affordable, but it is small so finding an apartment there is tricky. Lakeview is very good for young professionals and pets but is definitely pricier. Wrigleyville is even more expensive, but has good nightlife and restaurants. All three are super easy to access transit from and get to the Chicago campus.

I love how convenient the location is. There's a ton of great restaurants really close by, so many bus lines right around the corner or within a 5 minute walk, and Lincoln Park right across the street. My commute downtown is only 15 minutes and there's also a bus available to get to the brown and purple L trains. There's a Mariano's, Trader Joe's, and Target all within 10 minute walking distance so shopping is very convenient. I generally feel really safe walking in this area as the streets are busy and well lit.

Can't recommend living here enough. It's nice to feel like you live in a "neighborhood" with character and local spots. From fun bars to cute coffee shops, there's always something new to try! You also can't beat living steps away from the lakefront. Commute is super easy, on average 20 minutes via the express 146 bus.

Area has a lot of character, a lot of energy. There's something for everyone-coffee shops, sports bars, Boystown, multiple good grocery stores, quiet side streets if you just want to take a walk. And it's relatively affordable compared to other neighborhoods closer to downtown

I mostly chose to live in Lakeview because I wanted to be walking distance from the Synagogues. But I really love the area. It's definitely city, but there's still some grass/trees. The main areas are exciting and alive, but the side streets are still pretty quiet. It really has character, and it's got both Wrigleyville for the sports bar scene and the whole Northalsted (previously known as boystown) scene as well. Much more bang for your buck than a streeterville apartment. Depending on where exactly you live you'd either take the train or the bus to streeterville, but either way your commute is probably 30-40 minutes, which isn't so bad. Unless you have a car, in which case your commute is more like 10-15 minutes

Lakeview has plenty of beautiful, tree-lined neighborhoods and a robust bar and restaurant scene. It is a destination neighborhood with tons of boutiques, Wrigley Field, and a welcoming environment. I chose to live here because I am gay and wanted to have very easy, direct access to the lakefront path for running and biking.

The main reason we moved here was the neighborhood. Broadway, Clark, Diversey and Belmont are all within walking distance and offer all of the shops, restaurants, bars and grocery stores you could need. It really is in a prime, unbeatable location. Not to mention it's a block from Lake Michigan and walking distance to Lincoln Park and a short bike ride from Montrose Beach.

My street and neighborhood are usually fairly quiet. Sundays seem to be the going out day in the neighborhood but it isn't disruptive to my every day life. Overall it seems like a very safe area and being a young woman living alone, that is very important. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

The area of lakeview this apartment is in is between where the bars start in Wrigleyville at Clark and Sheffield and Boystown at Newport and Halstead. The street itself is pretty quiet but there are plenty of options for bars since it's right near Wrigley Field and Boystown. There are also plenty of great restaurant options, and it's a 6 minute walk to the Addison red line or a 10 minute walk to the Belmont stop.

I love Lakeview! There's honestly something for everyone somewhere in the neighborhood. From Wrigleyville's baseball and country bars to the rowdy drag shows of Boystown, you can have a totally new experience a few blocks from something else. Lots of great food for both a quick, cheap meal and a sit-down dinner, and some fun local shopping too.

I love the lakeview area. It is far more affordable than the surrounding boroughs, and everyone nearby is around my age (early 20s to mid 30s). Pros:
-Close to the Clark St strip in Wrigley -Lots of good restaurants nearby -A mile from the lakefront path, which is good for running and biking -Plenty of public transportation options Cons: -The only major grocery store in the area is Trader Joe's. You can't walk to a Jewel unless you want to walk over a mile. They are building a Mariano's around Broadway and Wellington, so that will be nice. -Occasionally loud drunk people on weekends wandering around. -The hospital (Advocated Masonic) can also be a source of late night noise. I am in East Lakeview, about a mile south of Wrigleyville, and essentially boarding Lincoln Park. It is the ideal location for me. I go up to Wrigley/Buena Park/Boystown a lot, head out to Humboldt Park/Ukranian Village a fair amount, and walk along the lake most nights down to Navy Pier and back. It's wonderful. I love living in Lakeview East and I could not recommend it enough. There is always something to do: new restaurants to tries, weekly pub trivia, or thrift shops to look through. It's exactly what I pictured living in the city would be like. I appreciate that there's less high-rises; it makes it feel more like a neighborhood of the city, but I still get the joy of being downtown when I'm on campus. Lakeview is a strange neighborhood seeing slow change due to continued popularity and ongoing gentrification. What used to be a low-middle income area full of LGBT people and ethnic minorities is becoming more white bread and upper middle class.
It has numerous sub-neighborhoods, including the super bro-y Wrigleyville and the still queer Boystown. It has a mix of lower income co-op housing and slowly dying out SRO housing with luxury condos and high rises. The area is generally safe, though the occasional mugging does occur and bar fights happen closer to the stadium on the regular. The neighborhood is often loud and bustling with people, with hospitals on both ends (St. Jo's and Advocate to the south and Thorek to the north) so a lot of ambient ambulance and fire truck noise is normal, plus sounds from people going to and from the many bars and restaurants lining Broadway, Belmont, Halsted, and Clark. Festivals draw neighbors into the streets and block traffic frequently during the summer, including Pride, Market Days, Lakeview Arts Fest, and others. Keep reading
