Gold Coast

Live In Diversity
One of Chicago's most lively neighborhoods, Gold Coast has something to offer no matter what day it is. Established in 1967, The Museum of Contemporary Art houses stunning modern masterpieces at one of the world's largest contemporary art venues.

Food lovers around the area cherish the large variety of options available to them with standout cuisine at Mei's Corner, Jellyfish, and the legendary Italian restaurant Nico Osteria. After a full day of activities, choose to crack a cold one at Zebra Lounge or dance the night away at any of Gold Coast's exciting night clubs. However you choose to spend your time, Gold Coast will have something for you.

Gold Coast — 8.8/10 Rating (based on 44 neighborhood reviews)
Classic old-school high-end Chicago neighborhood with a mix of bustling restaurant scene, quiet older streets with beautiful homes, and easy access to the lake. Area is fun and bustling on nice weekends but mostly quiet and calm on week nights. Right next to Old Town/Wells street for those looking for close bar scene, easy access to pretty much any other downtown neighborhood. Because it is still very close to Michigan ave/downtown there are fewer "local" type spots (you won't find much in the way of a family-run local sandwich shop, cheaper restaurants, interesting delis, etc.) but it still has a lot more character than River North, Streeterville, or the Loop. North of Division it is very residential with some of the prettiest old houses in Chicago. South of Division is more of a downtown high rise bar and restaurant scene. Can get a bit rowdy during nice summer nights but mostly with people going to fancy restaurants or sitting at fancy bars. Sort of halfway between a more residential neighborhood and a downtown neighborhood. Best part is location by far, easy access to pretty much anything in the city given proximity to bus/train lines, access to lakefront path, and close walking distance to other neighborhoods.

Lincoln Park and the zoo are within walking distance, if you want to do something active. The apartment is just a few blocks from the beautiful lake shore. Gold Coast has limits on vehicles so it's a pretty quiet area and the streets. Neighborhood is relatively safe and people are kind. Division street has multiple bars and the apartment's alley leads right into them, if you want to grab a drink. Old Town and Second City off Wells Street is about a 5-10 minute walk which has a good, young social life.

I absolutely love living in this area. You can't beat having the lake on one side and million dollar homes on the other. It's also so convenient to get to work - I hop on the 151 which picks up right outside of the building and goes straight down Michigan ave within 2 blocks of my office. You're also close enough to bars/restaurants in Old Town and Clark/Division but far enough away to avoid all the noise and people.

The Gold Coast experience is a bit like two sides of a coin depending on your exact location. There's the supposedly infamous Viagra Triangle, but really, it's just all a bunch of ostentatiously wealthy people who literally mill around and block the entirety of the sidewalks all evening long. If you're more of an extrovert who has a lot of superfluous cash, that would probably be a fun place to be? I'm more of an introvert, so I'm happy once I pass Division (with its own subset of bars--again, there's a lot going on), and it's all architecturally stunning mansions and much quieter. In general, the most important thing that I can say about this neighborhood is that I have seen more dogs in this area at all hours than in any other city, period, and that's EASILY the best incentive to live in the Gold Coast.

I've lived in the Gold Coast for 12 years. I love the neighborhood, but it lacks new developments (that are under a million dollars per unit). The Gold Coast is as safe as you're going to get in Chicago. There are so many places and other neighborhoods that are in walking distance. Being on the lakefront, I believe the Gold Coast is the best neighborhood in the city.
