The Loop
Home in the Heart of Chicago
This centrally located neighborhood offers its residents with very popular architectural signature landmarks such as the Frank Gehry-designed amphitheater or the most visited Cloud Gate with its contemporary designs. The Loop —
8.5/10 Rating
(based on 312 neighborhood reviews)
Good neighborhood with most necessities in walking distance. Travel to other areas is easy as there is plenty of public transit or it is walkable.
Better selection of restaurants outside of Loop. Perfect location to get to Hyde Park. Keep reading

The Loop doesn't have a ton of character, is constantly crowded with tourists, and is a little lacking in terms of bars/restaurants. BUT I've always felt safe, Millennium and Maggie Daley Parks are great, and it's close enough to River North, West Loop, and the L to get where you'd want to go.

Great for pets! Lots of grass areas. There's quite a few restaurants within the Lakeshore East park, and easy access to Mariano's. It feels like a "suburbian" neighborhood right in the middle of the Loop as there are lots of families, and is somewhat removed from all the tourists that frequent Michigan Ave.

Living in the Loop isn't great in and of itself. It gives you no exposure to the neighborhood-y feel that Chicago is known for. BUT, the experience of 90% of your best friends living on the same block as you is something that you've probably not had since college and probably will never have again. It's incredibly convenient for getting to school, partying, studying, etc.

Columbus plaza is on the quieter side, a few blocks away from Michigan. Tides and park millennium are even quieter but lack the river views that CP offers. It can be a bit too empty at night, which may be of concern to some. Most of the nearby restaurants in the pedway focus on serving office workers so they close around 6pm. Great access to river walk for running or biking.

I love living here because it is right downtown, but a little but away from the fray of Michigan Ave. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops within walking distance. There is also a CVS and Mariano's right behind the building in this little neighborhood. It is right in the heart of downtown so some view it as "too touristy".

Love the neighborhood! As long as you don't mind an influx of tourists in the summer, it's a great place to live. It's a quick walk to Millennium Park & the lake. It's also very easy to get to the River North area. It's a central area for the CTA and walkable to the Metra. Some restaurants are closed early and on weekends, but there are more places open the closer you get to Michigan Ave.

The loop is always bustling and is a fun place to live. We are right near the lake, and it's super easy to get to State or Michigan. It's a pretty central location. I love this neighborhood for the amenities, proximity to everything and safety. However, what this place lacks is variety of places to eat. Being downtown / in the financial district means most restaurants and coffee shops close early after the end of the work day, and it's quite busy with tourists, but again, it makes sense while at Booth because it's so close to the Metra station to go to campus and because ~85% of students are in the Loop (which makes it easier to meet for social outings, team meetings, club events, coffee chats, and just hanging out in general). It's also a 10min walk to Gleacher where evening classes (optional) are held. If you don't feel comfortable walking alone at night, there will always be someone walking back to MPP to go with you so that's another advantage.

Honestly, living in the Loop is not very exciting. There are so many cuter neighborhoods further north, and Hyde Park itself is also pretty nice. Living in the Loop makes perfect sense for Booth students. I would never consider living in Hyde Park, given we are typically only down there a few days a week and everything we do socially / on weekends takes place in the city. The Loop has pros and cons. Living in the Loop is nice because during the day up until about 8 p.m. there are people walking around the streets which is nice because you feel more secure walking. However, on weekends and after a certain time at night it empties and it can be a little eerie.
That being said, if you're anywhere near State St. or the Mag mile, there's pretty much people around at any given hour. It's fun to live downtown because the streets are bustling with interesting people, sometimes there's live music on street corners and there are a lot of restaurants and shops. Keep reading

Beautiful area in a great location with a dog park, playground, and full service grocery store in short walking distance. Restaurants and transit are just ok in this area, but not a bad walk to the "L" and that opens up the restaurant options. No close-by childcare for kids under preschool age, but great preschool and private elementary school, with high price tags. Ubers often find this place impossible to locate due to GPS's going crazy with the multiple layers of Wacker, Randolph, Columbus, and East South Water Street.

Great location close to blue, brown, green, pink, orange and red lines. 10 minute walk to State St., 5-10 minutes to River North, 15 minutes to Michigan Avenue. Grocery stores aren't really walkable but most people in the building use PeaPod/Instacart. Safe to walk around at night. A lot of new restaurants (quick service) opening in the area.

Not my favorite neighborhood simply because it's very touristy, as downtown as you can get, and loud, but it's very easy to get anywhere else in the city from here, which is fantastic. The Loop is like living in the financial district of any large city. There isn't much in terms of culture and there is no "neighborhood" feeling. I like living here because of the easy commute to school and other areas of the city, but I plan to move to a smaller neighborhood once I graduate and I am working. The loop is a "neccessary evil" when going to Booth. As a native Chicagoan, I much prefer other neighborhoods to the loop; however, I am extremely happy here as a Booth student. It is great to live near everyone else, recruiting events tend to be nearby and it is overall easier to get anywhere in the city from here. Will it feel as residential or "neighborhoody" as other neighborhoods in Chicago, no, but it has been a really great experience to be part of the community.

The loop isn't very fun, but it is convenient to get to millennium station to get to Booth/Harper Center. The Loop is quite touristy, and there's not much to do. Restaurants close early on weeknights and aren't open during the weekend.
