Shaw
Trendy, Up-and-coming Neighborhood with Strong Roots
One of the city's oldest neighborhoods, Shaw is a cocktail of history, entertainment culture and of course, food. This neighborhood brings performing arts from the Howard Theatre and Ethiopian food in Little Ethiopia. It also nurtures a sense of gratefulness in the African-American Civil War Memorial.
It's recognized as one of the city's most up-and-coming neighborhoods with a spectacular dining/bar scene and plenty of shops. It's gotten a lot of recent buzz and for good reason since this trendy neighborhood is one of DC's best.

Love the neighborhood. There have been some incidents nearby (but that happens in all cities). My wife and I feel safe in general. We just take more care when commuting at night.

The neighborhood is rapidly becoming gentrified, for good and bad. When we moved in, the Giant grocery store was brand new; previously, the area had been a "food desert." There was a shooting on our street the day we moved in, and there continues to be a lot of targeted gang violence. People living in subsidized housing nearby, and have lived there for decades, are slowly being moved out of the city, and new expensive condo buildings are springing up in their wake. Expensive restaurants have filled the neighborhood at a rapid pace in the past 2-3 years, and the juxtaposition between the rich and poor is increasingly apparent.

No bad experiences here. But parts of the area near the apartment can be unsafe with homeless population, etc. Shootings and robberies have happened in the area and you need to be aware. But it has been drastically cut down

Shaw is the trendiest neighborhood in DC right now. All the latest bars and restaurants are popping up along 7th and 9th streets. That said, it's still a neighborhood in transition.

Neighborhood is generally safe during the day although I would not walk alone at night in certain areas. Very busy during weekends because of U street.

The immediate surrounding neighborhood is brand new and lively. The Shaw/ U Street Neighborhood in general can still be a bit gritty, like many parts of the city, but it’s undergoing lots of new construction, with new restaurants and retail stores popping up. Overall, I’ve felt very safe living here in the city and in my complex.

I don't exactly feel safe in this area and I avoid walking around at night because it can be dangerous. U street gets crowded and can be enjoyable/convenient for nightlife. In the mornings walking to class is fine. There are a lot of homeless on the street.

Very vibrant part of town, with a lot of young professionals. There is a lot to do in the neighborhood from restaurants, bars, and even workout studios/gyms. There is so much within walking distance, and there are two metro stops also within walking distance. It is very convenient especially if you are a Howard student. You really couldn’t be in a better neighborhood than U Street corridor and the Shaw District.

The Shaw neighborhood has a lot of history and culture in it. They have done a ton of remodeling old buildings. Lots of restaurants and bars (especially outdoor areas for covid times) with a varied range of upscale/foodie restaurants to divey bars.

The only thing we're missing are fast-casual restaurants less than 5 minutes walking distance away, but coming from New York, I know that's a high expectation.

It’s undergoing gentrification so there are ups and downs. It’s close to everything- downtown dc, the U street party life and the Chinatown area, as well as a lot of federal jobs. Shaw itself has a lot of new bars and restaurants so it is pretty great.
