East Village —
8.6/10 Rating
(based on 60 neighborhood reviews)
I love the neighborhood. It's very lively and there are tons of restaurants and bars. It's a close walk to NYU's campus which is great for students. It has a Target and Trader Joes and lots of subway stops not terribly far. There are so many Stern students living in East Village so living there is very convenient.

If you can stand the ambulances and fire trucks (at least 10x per day on Avenue A), it makes for a good location from which to both attend NYU (15 minute walk westward) and walk along the East River once in a while. There's also Thompkins Square Park. Decent bar/restaurant scene, though dampened by COVID.

It’s a very convenient location, close to markets such as Trader Joe’s and whole foods. It’s also very close to public transportation with a ton of restaurants and bars to choose from. Close to shopping area as well because it’s near Union Square. About a 15 minute walk to NYU Stern. Great location for people new to NY.

Alphabet City has been a great place to live in New York - there are a lot of bars and restaurants around, so it's relatively easy to convince friends to go out around the neighborhood. The walks to the closest subways (the L, F, and 6 trains) are relatively pleasant, and it's easy to walk over to the East Side Parkway if you're interested in running by the river. It feels like a pretty central location without being too much in the thick of it - Avenue B is quieter than Avenue A, and Avenue C is quieter than Avenue B with regards to noise. There are usually people out and about, so it's safe to walk home late at night.

The East Village has an amazing social scene that is really worth experiencing if you can. There are tons of great bars and restaurants, including a number of landmarks/icons like Mcsorley's (literally in a popular 1912 painting) and Katz's Deli. It is particularly nice because you can access the rest of NYC fairly easily via the 4,5,6 or N,R, while still being able to walk to some of the harder to access spots like the LES.

The East Village is full of young people, bars, and restaurants and is close to NYU. Public transportation is average -- I walk 0.2 miles to the F train and a little further to the 6 train, if I'm going up the east side.

I was new to NYC when I came to Stern, and my first place was in the East Village. I recently moved to another building in the same neighborhood. The East Village can not be beat in terms of bars/restaurants and night life. It is also incredibly convenient in terms of proximity to NYU.

Getting towards the shadier part of the East Village, but I've never felt in danger. Google "East Village" and everything you read is probably true. Great nightlife, loud, and affordable depending on where you decide to stop in.

Great. We live definitely closer to the West side - as in by Union Square. The farther east you go the idea is it becomes less safe. Lots to do, lots to see, and a straight shot to school

I've been in the city for almost 3 years now, and the East Village has certainly been my favorite neighborhood to live and go out in. Excluding during the pandemic, there are great restaurants and bars on every block, grocery stores within a 15-minute walk (if not closer), and the general atmosphere of the neighborhood is lively and friendly. I generally feel quite safe walking around alone, unless it is very late at night/early in the morning. It is more expensive than the neighborhoods around campus, but I took advantage of the lowered rents due to the pandemic.

Love love love. Lived in Brooklyn before and was skeptical of moving to Manhattan, but the East Village is great. Tons of reasonably priced restaurants and bars, great public transit (if you're not too far east), and close enough to the law school to get there easily but without feeling like you're on campus all the time. Only complaints are 1) there's not a great place nearby to go for runs (East River path north of Houston is kind of gnarly), and 2) it does attract kind of a frat boy crowd so we have some noisy neighbors who like to play beer pong and play terrible music late into the night.

The apartment is located in the East Village that has so much life and activity. There are a ton of restaurants, bars, coffee shops and cool spots to meet up/hang out. You'll never run out of things to do. The neighborhood (at least until you go east of ave B) feels safe and secure, even with a lot of homeless people.

This is a great neighbourhood - lots of stuff to do, and for the quality of restaurants, bars and coffee shops, much much better value than almost anywhere else in Manhattan (except maybe LES). It's also well connected to transit, and I have a 10 minute walk to school which is a luxury that is hard to over-estimate. The only problem is that it is very noisy.
