Fort Sanders

The Epicenter of Students
Fort Sanders is a popular area for students, faculty and staff of University of Tennessee. Cumberland Avenue, also known as "The Strip," is a popular destination for dining and entertainment, with numerous options for food, drinks, and nightlife. Check out LiterBoard, Half Barrel, Fuego, Saloon 16 and Oscars Restaurants for delicious food and drinks. The neighborhood is home to the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, which is a major healthcare facility serving Knoxville and the surrounding region. This medical center plays a significant role in the community. While it's an urban neighborhood, Fort Sanders does have some green spaces and parks where residents can relax and enjoy the outdoors. World's Fair Park, a bit south of the neighborhood, is a notable example. The area is very student heavy specifically undergrads, so it tends to be loud on the weekends especially for game days and weekend nights.

Fort Sanders — 7/10 Rating (based on 25 neighborhood reviews)
Fort Sanders is right next to campus, so it is definitely undergraduate-heavy. If noise from parties is really going to mess with your peace of mind, I wouldn't recommend it. But it's nice to be so close to the law school and downtown.

The neighborhood is not very safe. We hear gunshots and fireworks fairly often, so it can be hard to differentiate at times. There's also a lot of parties, and people are not very safe drivers (or pedestrians). Also, people do not clean up after themselves, so there is always garbage/general grossness in the neighborhood.

It's mostly if not all college kids, and the typical noise pollution that comes with it. The undergrads can be heard partying right as you get to studying and the intoxicated screeches of some failing business management major echo through the fort as though William P. Sanders himself was coming back from the grave. There are some nice things about the fort including Thai food, close to campus and downtown and parties if get blacked out on a Tuesday night is your sort of thing

Neighborhood itself is fine, but it is located downtown in a city. There are some safety concerns. A few students I know have had their cars broken into - especially if accidentally left unlocked. There is a growing homeless population. However, the people are largely friendly.

Lots of undergrads so it is loud because of parties. It is a great location you can walk to all the restaurants and bars on the strip as well as the stadium on game days. 7 minute walk to the law school.

Close to campus, but very young. Lots of parties taking over entire streets on Wednesday nights - overall lots of fun if you’re an undergrad, but not as fun when you have normal bedtimes!

Its close proximity to campus is a bonus, but there are homeless people who wander very close. The campus nightlife is close too, as the weekends are loud and quite chaotic

As I mentioned earlier, the Fort is mostly where undergrads live so it can get pretty noisy on the weekends , especially on game days or big holidays like Halloween.

However, I love being able to walk through the Fort and get to Worlds Fair Park and the riverfront (I took daily walks on this loop during COVID lockdown). It’s very peaceful and really pretty.

It's fine! Lots of partying in the general area but it's very close to campus and my apartment's walls are pretty thick so I can't hear too much. I have a dog and I love to walk him, but there's so much glass on the ground and no one picks up their dog's poop in the area. It's pretty gross honestly. The best thing about Fort Sanders is the location.

The neighborhood isn’t bad. There are a lot of UTK undergrads in the area as well as fraternity and sorority houses. We have a corner market where you can get drinks, snacks, frozen foods, etc. I haven’t had issues with anyone in the area. It does get a little chaotic during UT football weekends.

This is in the college student area so that does effect things. Parking can be an issue. Being close to the strip is nice and being only a mile and a half from downtown gives lots of food and things to do options.
Walking to school is definitely an option.

The neighborhood is safe enough, but it's still in the Fort, which is the least safe area near campus. The community is gated, so that helps, but they leave the gate open pretty frequently.

This is not a bad area to live, but it is very undergraduate heavy. If you don't mind loud noises on the weekend, especially during game days, then this area will not be a problem.
