Devil's Pocket

Small and Friendly Residential Neighborhood
At only 3 square blocks, many miss the smaller neighborhood of Devil's Pocket. Tucked in between Fitler Square, Graduate Hospital, and Grays Ferry, Devil's Pocket is home to a large Irish-American population. Gentrification has brought some local businesses to the area, such as Thai Square and Devil's Pocket Food & Spirits.

Devil's Pocket consists of pretty rowhouses along an industrial landscape near the Schyukill River. The addition of the new Roberts Center for Pediatric Research, part of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, expands Philadelphia's skyline. This residential neighborhood is family and student friendly. It is close to campuses and Center City, with the added perk of a lot of quietness.

Devil's Pocket — 9/10 Rating (based on 36 neighborhood reviews)
The Graduate Hospital area is up and coming and a great spot. It's close enough to Rittenhouse's restaurants but also has it's own set of restaurants. It's full of young professionals, especially medical folks. It's very family friendly. It's close to the South Street Bridge, which I feel is a safer/easier bridge to bike/walk across to University City.

This neighborhood feels like a small, tight-knit community - I see friends around the neighborhood all the time! Once I lost my wallet nearby and a complete stranger tracked down my email to return it to me, with nothing missing. I love living here!

Not noisy. Close to everything but still separate from the hustle and bustle of Rittenhouse/Center City. Nice grocery stores, Schuylkill River park very close. Great coffee shops.

Again, the people here are awesome. There are so many wonderful people we meet all the time it's almost hard to keep track. I can't recommend this place enough. If you have a family I think you would be crazy to live somewhere else.

This small neighborhood is just south of Naval Square and offers an affordable alternative to Rittenhouse for those seeking a larger living space. The streets are very narrow but generally offer decent parking. The nearby power plant produces some mechanical hum, but never strange smells or smoke. The neighborhood is very close to the South Street bridge, offering excellent bike and foot access to UPenn and the Schuylkill River Trail. The neighbors are a combination of med school residents, nurses, and other local Philadelphians. The neighborhood has a safe feel and is generally very quiet.
