Fishtown is the epitome of hip and cool. The former working class neighborhood is now flourishing with the best culinary, art, and music scenes in Philadelphia. The mega city coffee shop La Colombe's flagship cafe is located here, as well as Philly Style Bagels, voted one of the top 5 best sandwiches in America by Bon Appetit. Also check out PIzza Brain, a delicious pizzeria and museum, Root, and Wm. Mulheirn's Sons. Fishtown's spirited nightlife includes hip bistros, the indoor-outdoor Frankford Hall beer garden, and Yards Brewery. Enjoy indie bands perform at Johnny Brenda's, catch a show at the Fillmore Philadelphia, or win some money at the Sugarhouse Casino. If you are in town during the first Friday of the month, don't forget to stop by the galleries and studios along Frankford Avenue that are open to the public!

I love living in fishtown! It is getting a bit expensive for people looking to buy in fishtown (or even rent I have heard) but the neighborhood has everything - grocery stores (not trader joes though), rock climbing, gyms, dog parks, walkability to restaurants, bars etc, <10 min subway ride to center city on the market-frankford line. It is a PAIN to get to school via public transit so I just drive to prevent having to do an hour long commute. The part of the neighborhood I live in mostly consists of lifers who look out for one another as well as newcomers like me (5 years in my house). It is super dog friendly including many of the local businesses. I see a lot of young families walking around the neighborhood however, from what I have heard (I don't have kids) public schools here are terrible. I usually feel safe in my neighborhood but as anywhere in a big city there is crime that happens.

Fishtown is a great neighborhood to explore, and definitely live if you're open to being off campus. It's very similar to Brooklyn in NYC with a quieter feel than the rest of the city but some of the best bars, restaurants, and coffee shops in all of Philly. I enjoy getting out of West Philly and having a place in the city to call my own, so I appreciate a bit of a commute (though not for everyone). It is right along the El, so the subway ride to Penn is about 10-15 minutes.

Very fun neighborhood with an abundance of great spots for food and drink. There is also a very fun character and a good community along Frankford and Girard. Overall feels safe, with the exception of occasional police activity around the Girard SEPTA station

Short walk to the subway which is then about a 10-15 ride to the office.

Lots of young people and young families have moved into the area recently. There is a ton of new construction, restaurants, and stores popping up.

Negatives - lots of litter, but I guess that's Philly. What else is new?

Easy 30-35min commute to/from campus on the Market-Frankford line (Septa, $2.50 fare), easily within biking distance of most of Philly. Lots of great coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and gyms/studios, plus tons of nearby parks and public outdoor space. Neighborhood is safe and friendly. My parents Googled it and tell me that it's "hip."

We are only a few blocks from all the prime fun Fishtown spots and the Girard El stop. Rent is affordable compared to other neighborhoods and there's new restaurants and bars popping up all the time here. It's an easy 15 minute train ride to downtown and our street is very quiet and neighborhoodly (this is easy to find in Fishtown because of all the cute tiny streets). There is an Acme very close at 2nd and Girard (which can get pricey) but with a car, there are several more affordable grocery stores just a 10 minute drive up Aramingo. The major con is the parking, which is fairly typical of all up and coming young professional neighborhoods. From what I've heard it's still better than South Philly. It also can be tricky to find a place in a great location, now that the neighborhood is expanding so rapidly. Lots of places listed as Fishtown are actually really far from everything so watch out.

The street is quiet enough but it's close to many great bars, restaurants, main roads and public transportation, parks, etc. Sometimes on weekends, parking is a bit difficult because of all the nearby things to do.
