Really like it here!
The apt is great. The pool and courtyard are great for hosting. The apt is modern and it's a 10/10. It's about a 10 min drive from school and within 10 mins from any store (Target, Walmart, Trader Joe's etc.)

10 minute drive from Duke, excellent location
Crowne is a luxury apartment, which is something to keep in mind when considering its rent prices. The best bang for your buck is living with someone else, whether that be a partner or roommate. It's possible to live alone here as well but it may mean you spend less in other areas (at least if you're trying to stay within the Duke budget). It also wouldn't be feasible if you didn't have a car. If you do have a car, it's a 10 minute drive to Duke/Trader Joe's/Chapel Hill, 5 minute drive to Wegmans/Target, and 1 minute drive to Walmart.
Otherwise, there isn't much to complain about with Crowne. The apartments are new, there's great sunlight, there's a rooftop pool, covered parking, and a gate. The apartments all have very new/convenient technology. Another major plus is living in an area with so many stores, many of which are walkable (Chipotle, Jersey Mikes, Sephora, Home Depot, Moe's, Five Guys, Blaze, etc).

More MBAs should live here
Great leasing office, spacious grounds and apartments, 10mins from school and close to Chapel Hill grocery stores. Absolutely worth the price.

aesthetically pleasing, but severely lacking in security and safety
i have lived here for over a year now. apartment itself is beautiful and management is very responsive to any service or maintenance that needs to be completed. you can tell that some things within the apartment were poorly built or were the cheapest option available, but regardless the apartment itself is very pretty and very spacious. additionally, now that i have renewed my lease, the rent increased very minimally, which i really appreciated.
several things that i have not appreciated it:
- the walls are thin and you can often hear other residents above, below, and next to you.
- there have been several times that i have had unprovoked ant infestations. management was responsive to this and sprayed, which has since warded off any more pests.
- the community is gated, but there have still been many crimes occurring in the area, that have targeted residents. there have been many car break-ins, as well as several cases of total car theft. additionally, there was one home invasion. the security is definitely lacking in this apartment complex, as these crimes have occurred several times over the last year, but management has not made any efforts to prevent further occurrences. at one point, i sent them an email expressing my concern about all of these crimes, but they never responded. they have never given us more information about these crimes either, apart from reminding us to obviously lock our cars and doors.
- the parking garage has many parking spots, but it is not spacious enough for two-traffic, in that you often feel like you may run into cars coming in the opposite direction. in fact, i have seen at least one car accident due to this in the garage. management has responded pretty poorly to this. they put up mirrors in the garage, but because the garage is so tight, these mirrors are all but useless.
overall, it is a lovely place to live, in that the apartment itself is nice, spacious, and decently prices, and maintenance requests are taken care of promptly. however, there are many concerns when it comes to security and safety, which in my opinion, takes precedence over the aesthetic value of the apartment. i think that it is a reasonable place to live and i plan to continue living here, but it is really important to be vigilant and proactive about your safety because, unfortunately, management is not prioritizing this.

Great place to live!
Management is fantastic and rent is lower than other comparable places. Property is safe with strong security features - I am VERY safety-conscious as a single female and I have always felt safe here! Close to many helpful amenities and campus.

Great place with great management
I love this complex, and the management is great! Super clean and good amenities. The rooftop pool is beautiful. The gym is nice but could have more equipment; for example, it does not have a squat rack or bar. It is also quite expensive and increasing in price each year.

Good for price!
Crowne 501 is a great space for the price if you get a two bedroom and split. Obviously, you can get cheaper if you want, but if you are willing to make the drive and value things like light / no bugs / good appliances / space / good parking, Crowne is good value, imo. The pool is also great, though the gym is small (but reasonable).
Management is responsive and repairs happens quickly.
The location is NOT walkable, but really good if you have a car--access to groceries (Aldi and TJs!), halfway to chapel hill, a variety of fast food / restaurants about.
It's around a 12 minute drive from Duke campus. Usually, if I have a class around like say 8AM, I can leave at around 7:30 and with parking in PG3 and walking in, I can expect to be on time. There is a bus stop nearby, but I've never used it. There's a fair number of other med students in the building, so I've been able to ride share when necessary.

Great but expensive
I love this apartment building. It is nice and new. They have good community events that people go to. The management is super friendly and helpful. The amenities are pretty nice. The gym does not have the most equipment if you like heavy lifting, but it has nice basics. The rooftop pool has a great view. It is very quiet and full of respectful tenants. The electronic locks are super convenient for me so I don't have to take keys with me. There is a community wifi for everyone where everyone has a unique password. In my experience, it does not work consistently. It feels very safe and secure, and they keep it very clean. It is also located in a nice area in between downtown Durham and downtown Chapel Hill. It is very close to a lot of restaurants and grocery stores. The only downside for me is the fairly high cost, which is maybe comparable to other nice apartments in the area.

Love the apartment
I love my apartment layout, the neutral color scheme, appliances are brand new, the building itself is brand new, and it's a convenient 9 minute drive to campus. My only qualm is that in order to have a tub, non-carpeted living room, and balcony, I had to be in a bottom-floor courtyard-facing unit, which is fine except it doesn't get much sunlight which makes it hard to raise healthy plants. Nice rooftop pool but the guest rules are strict and it is closed at night, mediocre apartment gym.
