Elevators have been down- should be great when fixed

I love the unit, it’s been quiet and I haven’t had any problems getting packages or deliveries. The only reason the rating isn’t higher is because the elevators keep breaking down and it’s been very inconvenient while they are working to upgrade all the elevators. It has not been communicated well and it’s difficult to tote laundry down to the basement without the maintenance elevator.

Studio Apartment at 40 E Oak

I have lived in this building for 4 years. It is a 12-15 minute walk from the hospital, located on arguably the nicest street in downtown Chicago (lots of boutique high-end stores that I could never afford). It is one block from the beach/lakefront trail. 5 minute walk to two different red line stations, 1 block away from multiple bus lines that can get you to Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, the Loop, or South Loop all within 15 minutes easily. It is surrounded by fun restaurants in Gold Coast which is a very nice and bustling area. It is a 15 minute walk to Chicago's largest green space Lincoln Park (the actual park). I'm a Chicago native and can confidently say there is not a more convenient location to live in the city. Add the fact that Gold Coast is an interesting, old neighborhood that provides a lot of character and nice separation from the hospital and you have the ideal spot to live as a Feinberg student. It is quieter than Streeterville, more interesting, much prettier, and more convenient.

Regarding the building itself: 1930s brick 20 story building that is very well maintained. Tall ceilings, great natural lighting, nice accents like picture/wall/crown molding that give character to the walls, very functional built-ins in walk-in closet, etc. My studio is very spacious, has a separate kitchen that is large and is through a pretty set of French glass doors that completely separate the kitchen from the rest of the apartment. Have never had someone over and not had them remark on how spacious the studio is and how surprised they are by the rent given location and space. Apartments are very quiet, have only heard neighbors on a few occasions. Building has a very pretty roof with views of the beach/buildings, no fancy stuff but lots of tables and lawn chairs. Gym in basement is pretty functional, bike room, laundry room. Front desk staff are very friendly and professional, management is great, maintenance are awesome, responsive, and friendly. Building also has convertibles and 1 beds that are beautiful. No pool, barbecues, or communal entertainment spaces.

Great vintage find in the heart of Chicago

40 E Oak is easily one of the best places I've lived. With its vintage charm and attentive staff, I couldn't ask for more. The building is kept nice and clean. There are great amenities like a gym, 24hr doorman, and Internet access included in rent.

Original Crown Molding, comfy and cozy

I absolutely love living at 40 E. Oak. It is prime location for shopping, site seeing, restaurants, bars, and best of all the lakefront. My only complaint was that they were raising the rent and asking me to leave exactly one year from my initial move in date. I would've most definitely committed to another year of living had they spoke to me and negotiated something. I have no complaints as far as service and maintenance.

Beautiful building, lots of light

This apartment is really lovely and the floor plans are unique. Some of the paint is chipping off the walls, but the building is very old so thats not altogether unsurprising. Management seems scattered but they are helpful when needed. Huge windows, and rooftop deck are a plus.

Gold Coast Reviews

The Gold Coast experience is a bit like two sides of a coin depending on your exact location. There's the supposedly infamous Viagra Triangle, but really, it's just all a bunch of ostentatiously wealthy people who literally mill around and block the entirety of the sidewalks all evening long. If you're more of an extrovert who has a lot of superfluous cash, that would probably be a fun place to be? I'm more of an introvert, so I'm happy once I pass Division (with its own subset of bars--again, there's a lot going on), and it's all architecturally stunning mansions and much quieter. In general, the most important thing that I can say about this neighborhood is that I have seen more dogs in this area at all hours than in any other city, period, and that's EASILY the best incentive to live in the Gold Coast.
I've lived in the Gold Coast for 12 years. I love the neighborhood, but it lacks new developments (that are under a million dollars per unit). The Gold Coast is as safe as you're going to get in Chicago. There are so many places and other neighborhoods that are in walking distance. Being on the lakefront, I believe the Gold Coast is the best neighborhood in the city.
It's right in the heart of it all. You're also really close to Navy Pier here, and it's a wonderful spot. Millenium park is a nice short walk away, and there's ALWAYS something going on.
Great neighborhood to live in. There are plenty of restaurants and shopping in the area. It's also close to everything, so it's easy to walk or take public transit.
My experience has been wonderful. I feel safe and there is always something to do, whether I want to go to a nearby festival or try out a trending restaurant or bar.
Gold coast is close to Division street and cool Gold Coast restaurants. We're a quick walk to the lake, shopping, and great places to eat.
Very quaint. Amazing homes and really close to RH Three Arts Café. Also a convenient walk to Old Town and Division St. Bars.
The Gold Coast is a great neighborhood and very safe. It's full of old people, but this building is very young.
